About My Electricity Agent

Our Story

When I, Arjun Bali, first bought my house, I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of electricity plan options available. Dozens of providers, hundreds of plans, confusing terms, and complicated pricing structures made it nearly impossible to make an informed decision.

That's when I talked to my neighbors, particularly some of the older members of our community. I discovered that I wasn't alone in my confusion. Many people, especially seniors, found the process of choosing an electricity plan incredibly frustrating and stressful. The utility fact labels were difficult to interpret, and comparing plans felt like solving a puzzle without having all the pieces.

This experience inspired me to create My Electricity Agent. I wanted to build something that would help everyone in our community, particularly those who might not be comfortable with technology or who find the overwhelming choices paralyzing. This is my way of giving back to society and making a real difference in people's lives.

How We Calculate Your Costs

We believe in transparency. Here's how we estimate your monthly electricity costs in simple terms:

Step 1: Your Usage

We take the monthly electricity usage you enter (measured in kWh - kilowatt hours). This is the amount of electricity your home uses in a typical month.

Step 2: Energy Charges

We multiply your usage by the plan's energy rate (price per kWh). For example, if you use 1,000 kWh and the rate is 12 cents per kWh, that's $120 for electricity.

Step 3: TDU Charges

TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) charges are fees for delivering electricity to your home through power lines. These are set by your local utility company and are the same across all providers.

Step 4: Base Charges

Most plans have a monthly base charge (sometimes called a "customer charge"). This is a fixed fee you pay regardless of how much electricity you use.

Understanding Fact Labels

Every electricity plan comes with an Electricity Facts Label (EFL). These documents can be confusing because they contain a lot of technical information. Here's what you need to know:

  • Average price per kWh: This shows what you'd pay at different usage levels (500, 1000, 2000 kWh). Use this to match your typical usage.
  • Contract terms: How long you're locked into the plan and any early cancellation fees.
  • Renewable energy: The percentage of your electricity that comes from renewable sources like wind or solar.
  • Base charges and fees: Fixed monthly costs that don't change with usage.
